Definitions of sex survey

Research description

Sex is an important component in many aspects of biological research. However, the meaning of "sex" is the subject of increasing debate. The goal of this survey is to identify the definitions scientists associate with the term sex in biology.

Participant information

The survey consists of 17 questions about the definition of sex in biology (14 multiple choice and 3 short open responses) as well as questions about your experiences and background. All questions are optional to answer.

Participation is voluntary and should present no greater risk than everyday use of the internet
  • The survey is confidential. Your name or email will not be collected at any point and questions were designed to reduce the sharing of personal information. Respondent Anonymity Assurance has been enabled in QuestionPro, which ensures that personal data such as IP address and location are not recorded.
  • Due to anonymous data collection once responses have been submitted they cannot be removed. Incomplete responses will also be saved.
  • Data will be stored securely and the full dataset will never be made publicly available. Limited data subsets corresponding to analyses may be released upon publication.
  • This study was approved by the Ethics Review Board at the University of Vienna (reference number 01453; [email protected]) and adheres to the European Union general data protection regulations with oversight from the Data Protection Officer at the University of Vienna ([email protected]).

There is no direct personal benefit or cost associated with participation in the study.
